Job Description: 

Job Summary:


The Coding Specialist II is responsible for accurately coding and abstracting typically more complex inpatient and outpatient services, interpreting provider documentation. Codes and abstracts medical records data completely and accurately using expert knowledge of ICD-10-CM and PCS, CPT4, MS DRGs and assigning appropriate Present on Admission indicators.


Work produced provides a solid database for use by Hospital Administration, Medical Staff, Quality Services, and other internal/external users as well as facilitating assurance of the optimal payment to which the facility is legally entitled with the lowest possible days in accounts receivable. The Coding Specialist II may be asked to perform coding audits, queries, and other tasks under minimal supervision as assigned.



Job Qualifications: 




Minimum of two years , (three years preferred), inpatient and outpatient ICD-10-CM coding and CPT coding and abstracting of multiple case types within last five years is required . Skills assessment examination required. Experience on Epic Systems preferred.



RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CPC (American Academy of Professional Coders) certification required or obtained within one year of hire.

Successful completion of basic skill evaluation testing.



High School Diploma/GED required. Completion of classes in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, ICD-10-CM and CPT coding conventions, and disease processes required. Successful completion of college-based coding program preferred.



Computer and encoder skills including 3m.

Ability to accurately perform ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT coding.

Capable of moderate keyboarding speed.

Ability to read and understand medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, patho physiology.

Ability to maneuver through multiple computer applications including encoders, abstracting, groupers, EMR and MS Office applications including Excel and Word required.

Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Critical thinking and problem-solving skills required.

Ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision, seeking direction as needed.

Ability to communicate proactively with clinical staff.
