Position Summary:

Rockwell Automation is looking for a Senior Hardware (HW) with electronics design experience to join their sustaining team and become a technical contributor. The primary responsibilities of this position are the development and support of electronics hardware used in Industrial Control products.   We are looking for people to provide engineering support for modules such as Programmable Logic Controllers, IO modules, and Communications devices.  The work includes interfacing with other engineers, and project managers to sustain or redesign existing Rockwell Automation products. Key elements of the role are product design cycle activities such as Functional safety impact assessments, creating or modifying functional specifications, complex circuit design activities on embedded systems and developing product qualification test plans to verify changes.  It includes designing and implementing changes to electronics hardware, defining and conducting design validation tests, and creating design documentation. This role is a growth technical position that will be a key interface across the organization.
There are several key attributes to this job function including:


  • Act as the center point of contact for all things related to the product from areas such as operations, product management, and quality.  Collaborate with other design, test, and manufacturing groups to meet project milestones.  

  • Use technical expertise to suggest redesign activity address areas of need or drive increased margin or sales.

  • Modify or create block diagrams, schematics, and integrate design elements and interfaces into final product design changes.

  • Applies analysis tools to conduct functional circuit simulation, Signal Integrity & EMI noise reduction techniques to PCB layout. 

  • Apply compliance requirements, such as UL61010 standards and CE standards around EMC/EMI. Also, provide artifacts around IEC 61508 functional safety requirements and manage the traceability of HW requirements

  • Take ownership of the entire development cycle: engineering prototype builds, product evaluation, and release to manufacturing in compliance with cost, quality, performance, and release targets.

  • Lead the identification and execution of engineering projects, including the planning (task, schedule, and budget), execution and reporting of the associated activities and milestones.

  • Create embedded code as necessary to exercise changes or implement design changes. 

Leadership/ Interpersonal

  • Provide coaching/mentoring for junior engineers or technicians and other support personnel without knowledge of hardware design.

  • Conduct tasks in accordance with applicable health, safety, quality, and environmental regulations (state/federal laws, ISO9001, ISO14000, etc.) as well as Rockwell Automation policies and procedures.

  • Work cooperatively in a multi-disciplined team environment;

  • Display well-developed communication skills. 


  • Maintain cost and quality consciousness on all development activities.

  • Communicate status and issues to business and technical leadership.

  • Take initiative in process and methodology improvements.

  • Ensure thorough familiarity with policies and procedures relating to standards of business conduct.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Experience requirements

  • BS Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering

  • At least three years of experience in electronics development in the areas of Embedded Hardware including analog or digital circuit design.

  • Some C/C++ programming experience.

  • Must have experience with design analysis tools ranging from schematic capture, PCB design, timing analysis to signal integrity

  • Hands on experience with hardware test equipment, including debuggers, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other equipment as necessary

  • Demonstrated track record of problem definition, root-cause debug, critical thinking, and solution delivery.

Desired Experience

  • MS Electrical Engineering

  • A basic understanding of regulatory development including UL508 & 61010, CISPR 11, and IEC 61508

  • Knowledge of industrial communications interfaces and protocols such as Ethernet IP & Control Net

  • Five plus years of experience in electronics development in the areas of either microprocessor, analog or digital circuit design.

  • 1-2 years of experience designing embedded systems, including the development of the embedded code.

  • Capability to effectively utilize Rockwell Software programming

  • Experience with FPGAs and Hardware Description Languages.
