Senior Systems Administrator

The senior systems administrator is responsible for installing, supporting, and maintaining servers and other airport IT related computer systems. They must be able to plan, coordinate and implement software version changes and use utility tools to monitor elements of the system, such as memory, central processing unit (CPU) and program errors generated from a system or software problem. The senior systems administrator must also have knowledge in systems design and configuration. They are responsible for responding to service outages and other problems that may occur during the airport’s 24/7 operation. They will need to constantly learn new skills as technology changes and increases in complexity. The senior systems administrator must also provide assistance and support to other coworkers as needed. This position is responsible for developing, implementing and maintaining systems that the airport relies on, with the primary functional areas listed below.
- VMware/VSphere setup, configuration and administration
- Dell SAN storage setup and administration
- Microsoft Exchange server administration
- Active Directory (AD) administration
- System backups
- Security – Security access/camera system support
- Server deployment and administration
- Various airport systems
This position plays a key role in TAIT’s information technology environment by working on critical systems that impact safety, security and law enforcement, and keep the airport operational.
Primary Responsibilities
Active Directory (AD) Administration
- Setting up, configuring, and maintaining AD domain controllers
- Creating AD group policies
- Setting up AD user rights and permissions
- Setting up and maintaining DHCP and DNS
- Configuring printers on the network including TCP/IP configuration, drivers, and firmware updates
- Setting up, administering, and testing Microsoft patches through Windows Update Server Services (WSUS)
Email Administration
- Patching and monitoring Microsoft Exchange
- Setting up and maintaining user accounts and mailboxes
- Setting up and maintaining shared resources
System Backups
- Designing, implementing, and maintaining a multilayered backup strategy to mitigate the risks of data loss in the event of anything from a system glitch to a catastrophe
- Verifies and tests that regular backups are working correctly
- Updates design as new systems are introduced and technology changes
- Design and maintain all system images including desktop and server images for backup and or deployment purposes
Server Deployment and Administration
- Capable of designing specification for Servers to fit the needs of the various airport systems while staying within a specified budget
- Understands and can configure physical server hardware including CPU’s, memory, RAID controllers, multiple NICs, iSCSI, and various redundancy options
- Set up and maintain all network storage devices
- Capable of creating and configuring virtual servers using VMWARE ESXI; needs to have an understanding of the pros and cons of using physical servers vs virtual servers
- Understand server certificates and certificate installation in a yearly update cycle
Various Airport Systems
- Administer, configure, and support various airport IT systems that currently exist as well as new ones that will be added
- Must be able to work on systems that are separated from each other for security reasons via physical and virtual networks
- Must be able to work within Windows exchange server to perform email functions
- Needs to be able to setup and maintain antivirus programs and deal with viruses, malware, spyware, Trojans, etc. if they are present
- Creating software packages and deploying to various computers on the network
- Setup and maintain VPN connections for Microsoft Windows based systems
- Setup monitoring of systems to determine when there could be issues in order to keep up system uptime
- Provided a higher tier of support for desktop support and backs up other IT staff as needed
- Keep track of IT inventory including but not limited to desktop, notebook and server systems
- Deal directly with vendors to spec out and order new systems including, desktops, notebooks, servers and peripherals
- Coordinates and directs outside contractors working at the airport
Training & Experience: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Information Technology, Mathematics, or related field OR related certifications from industry recognized organizations such Microsoft, Cisco, and CompTIA. Seven (7) years of progressively responsible IT experience being responsible for company systems. In-depth knowledge of and experience with active directory, Microsoft Windows server, physical server hardware, and backups/disaster recovery. Broad IT generalist knowledge and work experience encompassing Microsoft Exchange server, VPN support, TCP/IP, virtual servers and infrastructure, and Microsoft SQL database. Experience in systems specific to the airport industry or law enforcement is preferred, but not required.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Generalist knowledge of all disciplines within the Information Technology profession as it pertains to a senior systems administrator; demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment in response to information that can be sensitive in both security and personnel in nature; demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills, with ability to be responsive to airport employees, contractors, or tenants; written communications skills needed to produce documentation of various system designs and setup.
Physical Requirements: Physical requirements include arm and hand steadiness and finger dexterity enough to use a keyboard and telephone; occasional lifting up to 30 pounds; frequent carrying, pushing and pulling up to 15 pounds with occasional carrying; vision, speech and hearing sufficient to perform the essential tasks; capable of regularly walking to various parts of the airport without overly being exerted.
Licenses and Certifications: Must possess a valid Oklahoma Class “D” Operator’s License; ability to obtain and maintain eligibility to hold a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) badge.
Working Environment: Working environment is primarily indoors in an office setting; works full-time hours, outside of regular shift schedule, as required by operational needs.
