Job Description

A Broadcast Engineer is responsible for the day-to-day hands-on maintenance of the station's technical equipment. This includes traditional broadcast hardware as well as industry specific software and content production tools used by the station.   A Broadcast Engineer responds quickly and in kind to provide technical support as needed for news and other content production operations.  This position requires a solid understanding of electronics, electrical, mechanical, RF, and computer technologies used by the station.  Experience with remote broadcast events involving multiple cameras or locations is a plus.  A candidate for this position must have good interpersonal communication skills and can assist in training operating staff to use new and existing equipment to its fullest.  High efficiency in prioritization and excellent organizational skills are key to this position.  You must also be able to represent the station in the most positive manner when working with clients, suppliers, and the community we serve and interact effectively with a diverse staff.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions of the position:

  1. Takes direction from supervisor for installation and maintenance and repair of all technical equipment through the organization's multiple broadcast, online and production facilities. This includes broadcast automation systems, master control, and studio production equipment, newsroom computer systems, transmitters, microwave sites, satellite, ENG/Satellite trucks, and other equipment.
  2. Works in a manner that ensures maximum productivity and quality, and timely completion of assigned projects.
  3. Communicates with and works with engineering staff to ensure equipment is performing optimally, and to do preventive maintenance as needed on broadcast and IT systems.
  4. Contributes to maintaining up-to-date technical documentation that accurately represents the installed equipment at the station. This also includes creating new drawings for projects you are assigned.
  5. Requires being on call and flexibility to work odd hours during maintenance windows or as emergencies dictate.

  OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Supports remote broadcast events as necessary.
  2. Constructively works in kind with other departments to solve problems.
  3. Maintains personal availability and access for times of emergency and significant technical events or disruptions.
  4. Effectively communicates the status of problems, progress, and solutions to Engineering Supervisor, DOT, and to others daily.
  5. Ensures that our technical systems infrastructure is adequately documented allowing for the most efficient subsequent troubleshooting and maintenance.
  6. Performs minor building related maintenance tasks as may be required.
  7. Performs other functions as necessary or as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: 

  • Knowledge: Broadcast Engineering and some IT experience is required.  Preferred candidates will have 2-5 years' experience working in broadcast engineering or similar position.
  • Skills: Computer and technical skills are necessary. This includes a thorough understanding of electronics, mechanics, broadcast systems, maintenance and repair of broadcast and computer systems and networks. The candidate must possess a solid understanding of software systems used to operate a television station to produce content. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and excellent service and communication skills are required.
  • Abilities:  We are a 24/7 operation - and as such, a Broadcast Engineer may be scheduled to work early mornings, evenings, or weekends - as the station's needs dictate. You must be able to perform well under pressure. High energy and an ability to quickly understand complex situations and provide effective solutions are needed. Physical dexterity and mobility is required to work on, to observe, to occasionally lift over 50 pounds and manipulate various types of technical equipment. Basic abilities to use a computer, visual acuity, ability to talk on telephones with everyone from vendors to viewers, the ability to travel to various locations and willingness to travel on occasions is needed. A demonstrated ability to respond quickly during times of emergencies or breaking news is necessary.
